Gig Review: The Sword + Saviours + Black Cobra + Invasion

FIVEVenue: Underworld, London
Woman: 3 April 2008

The need for a beer at The Beget’s End pub above the venue has delayed us albeit momentarily, yet as we descend into the tight trifling grotto that is the Underworld we see Infringement have set off proceedings with their smart take on psych-thrash. This unexcelled trio of floppy-haired guitarist, feisty hull-basher and vocal hellraiser are belting out the decibels but don’t appearance of at all happy with the sounds they’re producing. There’s unceasing input from the sound-desk as a guy races upon someone and forth across stage changing microphones.

Inclusive of it all, Chan, our vocalist, lurks in the shadows, brooding low a full-length hooded cowl, blasting out a very range of rise and fall, once again which the guitar winds waves of compression with the odd taint of sludge thrown in for good proportions. The drummer down to just her teeny black bra beats out punishing rhythms with crashing cymbals and hi-hat clash. As the last note rings out, in a fit of pique the guitarist throws his guitar out onto the dancefloor, hardly missing the punters. It’s not a happy gang, but to be honest it wasn’t sounding as terrible as he obviously thinks it did.

SavioursBlack Cobra are on a pursuit to deafen. Two blokes, one awesome ruddy. The frontman’s sparkling, golden axe has been fed on account of the entire trio of guitar amps and he contrariwise has to tweak it in the vague direction of his mic for feedback to gibberish from its innards. When the afro’d drummer sets events in activity, the guitar throbs into life with a arrangement of big, dirty and, to be frank, abnoxiously ear-splitting chugging and the vocal immediately goes wholly missing. Perhaps what is required is three mics to disc-act the three amps drowning it into deference. This is a style that’s distinctly been honed at the “Instil Of Matt Pike”. Oodles of posturing, guitar-jabbing and facial grimacing stock up him plenty of love from those in face. Heading to the back of the venue, you can well-deserved make out his razor-sharp severe vocal and it really is damn awesome. Today is to be the day when we discover it’s not again clever to turn your amps up to eleven.
