12 string guitar strings

A: D'Addario, Martin and many others make 12 string sets which most music stores will have in stock. If it's an acoustic 12 string then you would normally use phosphor bronze strings just like a 6 string acoustic. I would probably recommend nothing heavier
I have heard that using 6 strings on a 12 string guitar will harm the guitar due to a change in tension on the neck, is this true?
